BAKER'S DISH

We’re going to begin a new page in our sports section. Beginning this Sunday, Feb. 3, we’re going to run a weekly community sports/recreation page. This is a gap we’ve been trying to fill in The Monitor’s sports section for some time. And thanks to some planning with former Sports Editor Oscar Gonzalez (thanks for the design), we made it happen.

Here’s what you can expect to read about on the weekly page:
>> Valley youths competing in area recreational sports.
>> Winter Texans competing in softball leagues.
>> The people behind the scenes at the various recreational departments.
>> A calendar of leagues that you can join.
>> A listing of recreation departments and boys & girls clubs in the Upper Valley.

This week, I sit down and talk to Weslaco’s Howdy Smith. At 80, Howdy is still as busy as ever, maybe even more busy than the 32 years he spent in the coaching profession.
